Kassandra, a nurse from the hospital
A rather cloudy Monday
I’ve been working in this hospital for almost five years now. Despite the stress and the two hundred percent I give up every day, being a nurse is quite enjoyable than it seems; it’s a rather rewarding job. Thankfully last week my patients weren’t very hard to deal with, partly because they had lost all their strength to talk, think or even move. Don’t get me wrong, they’re certainly recovering and are good to go within weeks notice. At the very least, the possibilities of them living again were very likely.
But then I met this little girl today. She was admitted into the extensive care department so that the hospital could treat her illness. Apparently, she had leukemia. I was in charge of delivering her medications and such as of yesterday, and seeing her pale face staring at me as I stepped through the door made my heart burst in sadness. For a while her face shone but it was soon replaced by a sense of disappointment that ran through her face. Then I told her that my name was Kassandra, and that I was going to be her nurse from now on. She replied to me with a weak smile and said her name was Lizzie. Lizzie was a very pretty name for a sweet girl like her, I thought.
I noticed as I walked in the room that she was holding onto something in her hands. I realized it was a comic book. And every time she looked at it, Lizzie would smile and just for a moment- I really thought that the colours were back to her cheeks. But as soon as I looked at her again, that same pale and disappointed look greeted me once more. Somehow, something about Lizzie made me want to understand her more and cure that sorrow in her clouded, young heart. As I said goodbye to her and closed the door, I swore to myself I heard a small cry and a soft whisper of a name that seemed to come out from Lizzie’s fragile mouth. Zack.
